Tools for Connecting

Broadband

If your remote workers are to have seamless communication with other employees, that will require a fast data transmission service. Broadband is much faster than a traditional dial-up connection due to its larger bandwidth and it is, therefore, recommended.

Virtual Private Network

What if your company stores data on a secured server?  Should remote workers have to access that data differently than non-remote workers?  Wikipedia defines a virtual private network, or VPN, below.

virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network, such as the Internet. It enables a computer to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if it were directly connected to the private network, while benefiting from the functionality, security and management policies of the private network. This is done by establishing a virtual point-to-point connection through the use of dedicated connections, encryption, or a combination of the two.

Having a view of your institution’s network that replicates that of on-site workers is essential in allowing a remote worker to operate effectively alongside colleagues.  (Guy 2008)

Wireless

As remote workers will need to travel on occasion (at least around their house), they will likely have a laptop computer versus a desktop computer. Because of this, wireless connection capabilities are required to keep them online and productive no matter what room, city, state, or country they are in.
