In Marieke Guy’s “Get Tooled Up: Staying Connected: Technologies Supporting Remote Workers”, she explains,

The ideal solution for most employees who work remotely is for the set-up at home to replicate the set-up in the office. This, if possible, means good quality equipment, timely office supplies and successful communications mechanisms. The computer should operate as if it were connected directly to the organization’s wide area network and allow the same access to files that on-site employees have. Workers should feel that they are completely connected to management and colleagues, and should not be hindered by their physical location. (Guy 2008)

While there are certainly challenges remote workers face, Web 2.0 technology is helping to bridge the gap more and more each day.  The tools discussed in the sections below explain how.
